RV-1 Flies Again

First landing in three years....

After nearly a year of restoration work by countless volunteers, the first “reflight” of the VanGrunsven RV-1, N5827N, occurred on February 19, 2012 from Hicks Airfield (T67) near Fort Worth, Texas. Winds were light, favoring Runway 14. The aircraft had been in a non-flying status for several years before being acquired by the nonprofit Friends of the RV-1, and it will now begin a tour of the United States and Canada that will end at AirVenture 2012. CPS Offers Rotax Rubber Replacement Kits

California Power Systems now carries Rotax 912 engine rubber replacement kits. These kits are furnished with the parts most commonly needed for the five-year engine service requirement. They were developed by Roger Lee for the Flight Design CT, but they will also work for other aircraft. Just re-measure the fuel, oil, and coolant lines for lengths needed on different installations. If other lengths are needed, contact CPS before ordering, as the parts will need to be ordered individually instead of by the kit part number.

For more information, visit www.800-airwolf.com, or call 800-AIRWOLF (247-9653).  Reference part number 15-08189.

Onex Sport Aircraft Receives FAA NKET Approval

Sonex Aircraft LLC has announced that the FAA’s National Kit Evaluation Team (NKET) has approved and published amateur building checklists for the company’s Onex single-place, folding-wing kit aircraft. These approved checklists will allow current and future Onex builders to show compliance with the FAA’s 51% rule. NKET checklist participation also opens the opportunity for Onex builders to legally obtain commercial assistance for their projects.

Sonex is also introducing Onex upholstery packages and Onex-specific installation provisions for the AeroConversions AeroVee engine.

According to the company, the Onex was designed to offer Sport Pilots an economical way to build and fly. The folding-wing design allows the airplane to fit into a garage or share hangar space. The wing panels can also be removed for trailering.

Report from the 2012 SSA Convention

The Swiss Stemme motorglider is loaded with unique features, including a pop-out nose cone and folding prop and this nifty backwards-folding wing to allow storage in regular hangars.

It was my good fortune to attend the 2012 Soaring Society of America convention at the Reno/Sparks Convention Hall in Reno, Nevada, February 1-5.

Besides a display hall filled with mostly white, gleaming, streamlined shapes, three large lecture halls hosted world leaders in aerodynamics, sailplane flight, launching methods, safety and meteorology. Read the rest of this entry »
